Stephen L. Parr
Senior Fund Manager
July 30, 1971, Look magazine published its landmark “Nixon Opens China” issue. Two weeks later, Vanderbilt freshman Stephen Parr committed to a double major in Business / Finance and China Studies. Three decades later, he parlayed his comprehensive command of China into a long-term investment strategy.
Stephen Parr understands Beijing. He knows how business works in China—and he’s been doing business there since 1984. “I grew-up in a 3rd World Country,” Parr says: “It was Arkansas in the early 50’s—an exact parallel with China today.
“We didn’t have one mile of highway until 1963. Now our state is home to the largest company in the world. I know, from first-hand experience, what China will go through in the next 50 years—because I’ve seen what’s happened in Arkansas in the last 50 years.”
All of which is why management of China-based companies routinely journey to Parr’s Memphis office for discussions and business advice.
